Purple Heart Medal Awarded to any member of the Armed Forces of the United States who, while serving under competent authority in any capacity with one of the U.S. Armed Forces,
after April 5, 1917, has been wounded, killed, or who has died or may hereafter die of wounds received in action against an enemy of the United States.
Prisoner of War Medal (Added per DoD Manual 1348.33 Vol 2, Nov 2010, pages 60-63) Authorized for issue to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the Armed Forces, was taken prisoner
and held captive after April 5, 1917.
American Defense Service Medal Awarded for military service between September 8, 1939 and December 7, 1941 under orders to active duty for a period of 12 months or longer.
Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal Awarded for military service with the Asiatic-Pacific Theater between December 7, 1941 and March 2, 1946.

CAPT Griffith M. Berg was born September 29, 1914 in Oregon
Son of William H. Berg and Myra M. Berg
and Married Patricia Coyle Collins Berg in District of Columbia on June 15, 1940.
There were no records found that would indicate Griffith and Patricia Berg had children.
He voluntarily entered into the US Army from Washington State,
Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on June 14, 1937.
His loss is recorded in the
Washington World War II Honor List of Dead and Missing,
page 12, Pierce County,
published by the War Department in June 1946.

Note 1: The death location, "Off the coast of Mindanao" is based on the best information available at this time. In the case of CAPT Berg, this location was verified on:
A. The American Battle Monuments Commission website identifies his assigned unit as the 57th Infantry Regiment, Philippine Scouts.
B. At the time CAPT Berg was Killed In Action he was a POW aboard the Japanese ship "Shinyo Maru" off the coast of Mindanao on September 7, 1944.
The Shinyo Maru was attacked and sunk by the U.S.S. Paddle, SS-263. His remains were not recovered.
